Is it bad to take two types of allergy medicine at once?

I have seasonal allergies and they have been killing me lately even though I take a 24-hour antihistamine (Allegra) daily. If I were to double up with another antihistamine (Claritin) would that be bad? And furthermore, would it even do any good? Or would I just be better off going to the doctor to get a prescription strength antihistamine?
